Meals on Wheels
Not rain, nor snow, nor sleet, nor hail will stop League members
from delivering meals to Wiregrass residents through the Meals on
Wheels Program at Wesley Manor. What began in 1975 still continues
today, as each Monday, League members gather together to choose
their route and catch up with one another before setting out for
their deliveries. (Some members even bring special guests along -
their children - to brighten the day of our residents.)
Each route carries a special significance to our members, as we are
often reminded that in the middle of our hectic schedules, we need
to stop and take time with those whose meal has been entrusted to
us. Whether it’s to listen as they talk about their grandchildren,
bring them their mail, or give them a hug, League members look
forward to delivering meals each week to our Wiregrass residents.
And, all would agree that we most definitely are on the receiving
end of this partnership, as we are always blessed by those we serve!
Dorothy Quick Center at Evergreen Presbyterian Church
It has been forty years since League members first visited with the
senior citizens at the Dorothy Quick Center of Evergreen
Presbyterian Church. Each Thursday, three League members graciously
arrive at the Center armed with snacks and prizes to bestow upon the
guests in attendance that day. After the snacks are prepared and
delivered, bingo is the name of the game. With four bingo cards
ready and waiting, we can never seem to call enough games to satisfy
the “child” in all of our seniors. Although the prizes for winning
may change with the seasons, the smiles and laughter heard
throughout the room each week are endless and a constant reminder of
why we serve.
Wiregrass Children's Home
In 2007 the league voted to take on the children's home as a one of
our signature projects. Using the proceeds from our calendar sales
we were able to add a bedroom to the bottom floor of the home. An
existing bedroom was converted to a playroom. The playroom, which is
completely handicap accessible, was a much needed facility for the
children's home. The next renovation we plan to do is to remodel the
upstairs.
Southeast Alabama Community Theater (SEACT)
Upon relocation of the League’s office to the Cultural Arts Center
in 2004, a natural partnership with the Southeast Alabama Community
Theater was born. League members currently serve as greeters and
ushers during each week of the theater’s three annual productions.
This partnership provides both an opportunity to assist our
community theater, as well as a flexible night clinic for League
members. For those members who have the honor of working one night
of the productions, each one leaves with a new appreciation for the
talent that has been displayed on stage. The League continues to be
a proud supporter of SEACT.

The following well-deserving organizations throughout the Wiregrass
Community benefited financially from the League’s fundraising
efforts during the 2005-2006 fiscal year:
Alfred Saliba Family Health Clinic
Children's Hospital of Alabama
Dorothy Quick Center at Evergreen Presbyterian Church
Dothan-Houston County Association for Retarded Citizens (ARC)
First United Methodist Church Meals on Wheels Program
HIS Prison Ministries
HIS Radio
Houston County Education Committee Literacy Program
Houston-Love Memorial Library
Landmark Park
Save-A-Pet
Wiregrass Children's Home
Wiregrass Humane Society
In addition, the League awarded two $1,500 scholarships to female
students who had returned to school to better themselves. Annually,
one scholarship is given to each foundation at Troy University and
Wallace Community College by the League. Each foundation screens the
applicants to determine which student best meets the criteria set
forth by the League. This year’s scholarship recipients were
Kimberly Faulkner from Troy and Amy Croft from Wallace.
